VINEYARD SOURCES
Ink Grade

Ink Grade Vineyard is located northeast of the town of St. Helena in the Howell Mountain AVA. It is one of the sources for Cabnert Sauvignon for our Napa Valley Meritage Adagio.

The Howell Mountain AVA is characterized by hillside vineyards at an elevation ranging from 1,600 feet to 2,200 feet just above the fog level. Thanks to the elevation and the lack of fog, the temperatures are cooler during the day and warmer at night than in the valley floor, allowing grapes like Cabernet Sauvignon to fully ripen every year and produce wines that are concentrated and structured.

Ink Grade is a beautifully terraced 200-acre vineyard of mountainous terrain high above the valley floor. Planted in 1990, the vineyard provides fruits to a few premium Napa wineries including Behrens & Hitchcock.

Tokalon

Andy Beckstoffer's  famous ToKalon Vineyard near Oakville in the  Napa Valley,  is the  source for our Napa Valley Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon.

Beckstoffer"s ToKalon Vineyard is located across Highway 29 from Mondavi-Rothchild's Opus One in Oakville. Purchased by Beckstoffer Vineyards in 1993, the 89-acre parcel was part of the original 359-acre ToKalon vineyard first planted by Hamilton Crabb in 1868. In the 1880s, the wines of Crabb ranked among Napa Valley¹s top vintages. To Kalon has continued to produce some of the Napa Valley's most sought-after wines every decade since. Today, Mondavi owns 250 acres of ToKalon and U.C. Davis, the remaining 20 acres.

Planted with multiple clones of Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc with modern trellising and closer vine spacing, the vineyard produces several luxury vineyard designated wines. These wines include SCHRADER CELLARS PAUL HOBBS, ATALON and wines from Karl Lawrence, Juslyn, Oakford, Merryvale, Behrens & Hitchcock, Cain, Provenance, Cardinale, Etude, and others.

ToKalon Vineyard
was named by Food and Wine Magazine as one of America's Top 10 Vineyards.

Dr. Crane

Andy  Beckstoffer's   Dr. Crane Vineyard,  St. Helena, Napa Valley  California  is one  of the sources for our Napa Valley Meritage, Adagio.

The DR. CRANE VINEYARD was originally planted by Napa pioneer Dr. George Beldon Crane in 1858. During the 1920’s the Chinatown of the City of St. Helena was located on the site. This historic vineyard property is located west of Route 29 in the City of St. Helena. The gravelly loam soils have been replanted (1998) to multiple clones of Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. Luxury premium vineyard designated wines from this vinyard are being made by Paul Hobbs, Behrens and Hitchcock and others.
Lk Cynthia

Lake Cynthia Vineyards, Napa Valley, California, owned by Kitchak Cellars, is the source for Scherzo, our Rose' of Cabernet. It is also one of the sources for both Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon for our  Napa Valley Cabernet and Merlot Meritage, Adagio.

The Lake Cynthia Vineyard’s microclimate features foggy mornings, warm days and cool bay breezes in the late afternoon.  The soils consist of moderately to well drained soils on old alluvial fans which is excellent for extraordinary Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grapes.

Because of our location at the southern end of the valley, our temperatures are often 10 degrees cooler than the temperatures just a few miles north. In general, this is caused by a regular late afternoon breeze blowing up the valley from the San Pablo Bay and San Francisco which often brings the evening fog.  Being on the east side of the valley,  we also receive more hours of afternoon solar light than the vineyards on the valley floor or on the west side of the valley.  The result is an excellent balance of a large amount of light without too much heat; less respiration of grape acids  due to the cooler temperatures and greater ripening due to both longer hours of sunlight and longer "hang-time" prior to picking in the fall.
